Term Definition
Hardware Collection of physical parts of a computer system.
Software The programs and other operating information used by a computer.
Peripheral Any auxiliary device such as a computer mouse or keyboard that connects to and works with the computer in some way.
Web Browser Software application for retrieving, presenting and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. For example:Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome.
Website A location connected to the Internet that maintains one or more pages on the World Wide Web.
Protocol A set of guidelines for implementing networking communications between computers. For example: http, ftp
Network Set of computers connected together for the purpose of sharing resources.
Intranet A local or restricted communications network, especially a private network created using World Wide Web software.
Internet A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.
Server A computer or computer program that manages access to a centralized resource or service in a network.
Client A device which used to connect to the web.
Web Page A hypertext document connected to the World Wide Web.
URL The address of a World Wide Web page.
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) A standardized system for tagging text files to achieve font, color, graphic, and hyperlink effects on World Wide Web pages.
HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) An application protocol for distributed, collaborative, and hypermedia information systems.
ISP (Internet Service Provider) A company that provides subscribers with access to the Internet.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Standard network protocol used for the transfer of computer files between a client and server on a computer network.
Cookie A small text file (up to 4KB) created by a website that is stored in the user's computer either temporarily for that session only or permanently on the hard disk.
CSS (cascading style sheet) A Web page derived from multiple sources with a defined order of precedence where the definitions of any style element conflict.
LAN (local area network) A network that connects computers and other devices in a relatively small area.
WAN (wide area network) A telecommunications network or computer network that extends over a large geographical distance.
Web Host The activity or business of providing storage space and access for websites.
Tag An HTML code that defines every structure on an HTML page, including the placement of text and images and hypertext links. For example:
  • <br />-Creates a line break.
  • <tr>- Creates a row in a table.
  • <td>- Creates a cell in a table.

  2. Web beacon---An often-transparent graphic image, usually no larger than 1 pixel x 1 pixel, that is placed on a Web site or in an email that is used to monitor the behavior of the user visiting the Web site or sending the email.
